Benton post office mural
Benton, Saline County

Julius Woeltz toured the local bauxite pits before painting this 1942 mural of an open-pit mine: men drilling for dynamite, loading ore into carts, one stopping for a drink. Bauxite becomes aluminum for airplanes, so the subject was timely. Woeltz finished the design days after Pearl Harbor, then joined the Army Air Corps, so another artist hung it. It now hangs in the Saline County Courthouse.
