Harvey Couch of Arkansas Power and Light gave the state this land on Lake Catherine in 1935, and the CCC started building the park in 1937. Its stone and wood cabins and this bridge are on the National Register as examples of the CCC's rustic style. During World War II, German prisoners of war finished some of the buildings the CCC had started.
