Newton County Courthouse
Jasper, Newton County

In 1938 someone burned the old Newton County Courthouse, most likely the sheriff, trying to destroy records of an embezzlement scheme. He fled the state and never stood trial. The WPA paid for the replacement, finished in 1939, and a plaque by the front door reads "USA 1939 WPA." It anchors the Jasper square today.
